This was awarded when a soldier had received between three and five wounds, or one wound resulting in the loss of hand, foot, eye or causing deafness. These awards were issued to officers and other ranks alike. It is marked '107' on the reverse for the maker Carl Wild of Hamburg. There is minor surface wear to the face of the medal, but the principal loss of approximately half the original silver finish is due to the absorbative qualities of the zinc base metal, which, over the last 50 years, has simply sucked in the silver off the surface. The earlier versions of this medal were in tombak and thus less likely to suffer in the same way. |
