This is the classic war time badge, worn on both shoulders by the troopers and NCOs of the SY. It was probably worn after the 1922 amalgamation with the Sussex Yeomanry until the introduction of cloth titles in WW2. Surprisingly, it is rather harder to find than the cap badge. The SY was first raised in 1794, disbanded in 1848 and later raised again in 1901. It amalgamated with the Sussex Yeomanry in 1922, forming two batteries of field guns as part of a four-battery unit, the 98th (Surrey & Sussex Yeomanry) Brigade, RFA. It served with distinction in both world wars. Its condition is OK, with a bit of wear and tear from use. |
