Title 1908 pattern trooper's sword
Nationality British
Period c 1910
Sold

The classic cavalry sword of the 20th century, adopted in a very similar format by the US army at about the same period. It used the concept of the thrust going quicker to the mark than any cut, and doing infinitely more damage. Ironic that when the British finally got the sword right, cavalry was virtually obsolete.

A rather scruffy example with a reasonable blade and minor overall rust patination, which has been largely cleaned off. The scabbard is marked 'R13', possibly for 13th reserve regiment of cavalry, and has an issue stamp for 1910, while the blade has one for 1915, as well as an Enfield inspection stamp with the broad arrow mark at the forte. The sword was probably made by Wilkinson's and the scabbard is marked 'WSC' (Wilkinson Sword Co.). The scabbard shows signs of considerable use, i.e. dings from spurs and evidence of bending and straightening, producing a somewhat serpentine look!

Hanger arrived safe and sound 11.30ish today. Very pleased, it's as expected. Your excellent pics make all the difference in terms of confident buying over the net. As a matter of interest, the frog, which as you said is very a/f, is, as you thought, 'spot on'. On closer inspection it is a mk.1 Naval Frog, designated 'for cutlasses'. Date seems around 1860ish give or take.

By the way, I think your site is very user friendly. Seems to work much better than many and up to date, a rarity!!!
