Carried by the old Austro-Hungarian army in WW1, particularly by cavalry and artillery units, the distinguishing feature of this is the muzzle ring with the integral foresight. There is a Hungarian maker's mark at the forte, together with an Austrian eagle stamp on the other side. The blade has a parkerised finish; there is a little minor bruising at the base of the scabbard, which has the remains of field grey paint around the frog stud. The frog stud has been repaired in the field with a rivetted replacement stud. It would appear to have been made without a ball finial, in all probability a war time production, though, curiously, the grips appear to be fruitwood rather than oak (war time bayonets tended to have oak grips, being cheaper). The grips are in particularly nice condition, with only a little bruising here and there. The iron elements of the hilt have been carefully hand cleaned with fine steel wool and oil. |
