Title 1885 pattern cavalry officer's sword
Nationality British
Period c 1876
Sold

The Wilkinson blade (numbered 21406) has the initials 'WNL' for Wilfred Neville Lloyd, along with his crest and coat of arms. The unusual feature of this sword is the cavalry hilt - I suspect it was factory-mounted at his request for service in Egypt or Burma on discovering that the three-bar artillery hilt gave insufficient protection to the hand.

He was commissioned in 1876 and served until retirement in 1896. He served with distinction through the Zulu War (1878-9), MID; the Egyptian Campaign; and the Burma War (1885-7), also MID. On retirement he joined the Gentlemen-at-Arms and was awarded an MVO.

Having received the beautiful medal that has been the subject of many recent phone calls, I am absolutely delighted with it. More importantly, the research you provided into the military backgrounds of all those involved made it all the more poignant. Thank you for your highly professional and friendly help and advice throughout the transaction.
