Title 17th Lancer other ranks buttons
Nationality British
Period c 1890-1914

These are plustron buttons from the lancer's dress tunic, with the classic motif of skull and crossbones, comemoratiing the 'death or glory' tradition of the regiment. This British unit was unique in using this device, often found in continental armies, particularly the French and German ones.

The buttons are ?10 each - please email me if you would like to buy one (or more). Specify a maker and I shall choose the best example for you on a first-come-first-served basis.

The buttons are by various makers. As of November 2014, there remain: 4 x J Samuel, London (19 mm diameter); 1 x Firmin & Sons, London (21 mm); 1 x Player Bros, Birmingham (21 mm); 1 x Smith & Wright, Birmingham (21 mm). They are mostly in good condition, but the Samuel buttons appear to have some old age staining, which shows on both the face and reverse of the buttons, while the Firmin button has a tiny dent. They are all roughly a normal yellow brass colour, not the varied hues that appear because of my flashlight.

testimonials

[From a vendor, rather than a buyer]

I'm delighted that you are happy with the badge and I hope you can sell it to someone who will value owning it.

I tried to sell it on eBay but they won't accept Nazi items. I then contacted several dealers via a Google search who mostly offered me £40-£50 after some haggling. Most of the other dealers tried to conceal its true value in their replies and also lacked manners which doesn't inspire confidence.

Ultimately it's about trust. I should think that most prospective sellers have done their own research and therefore know roughly what their item is worth. You were the only dealer who had the integrity to concede that my valuation was approximately correct and I respect your comment that you can't offer this as you need to make a profit. Your honest approach is greatly appreciated and I felt comfortable taking the risk in sending it to you.

Thank you for a smooth transaction
