Title 1796 Light Cavalry sword
Nationality British
Period c 1796-1820
Sold

This is the famous Light Cavalry sword of the Peninsula War/Waterloo period copied from an Austrian model of the late 18th century, as, indeed, was the Heavy Cavalry model of the same era. It was carried by Light Dragoon units (which later became Hussars) and also the early Lancer units after Waterloo.

It is marked at the forte Woolley & Deakin, Birmingham sword cutlers.

The guard is polished iron and the scabbard has a couple of holes: one, on the leading edge, looks like the result of a sabre slash; the other is at the base on the reverse edge where rust has left its mark. It has its original leather grip, which has been laquered, leaving it rather too shiny looking. The scabbard rings have been carefully replaced, brazing being used on the joins.
