Title 104th Wellesley's Rifles (Bombay) cross belt plate, hallmarked silver
Nationality British Empire
Period 1905
Sold

This fine silver badge (Birmingham hallmarked and maker marked for 'JRG & Sons', presumably Gaunts) was made for an Indian Rifle regiment with a most distinguished pedigree. Raised in 1775, in 1889 it became the 4th Regiment Bombay Infantry, in 1903 becoming the 104th Wellesley's Rifles.

This badge (9.3 cm from crown to base) is in fine condition (with all its bolts present and correct), mounted with a king's crown. It has all the battle honours you would expect for this regiment, the distinction being that the last battle honour is East Africa 1898, an honour unique to this regiment of the Indian Army. In addition, and in contrast to the other example on my site, it has the battle honour Waziristan (granted in 1895).

(In the photo, the backplate looks a little dark, but that is simply the lighting. It is in reality polished silver, as you would expect.)
