The parent of this regiment was the Honourable East India Company Bengal (European) Regiment, which was founded in 1756 and went through various changes of title, becoming the 1st European Bengal Fusiliers in 1846, transferring to the British line as the 101st Foot in 1861. By then this regiment was largely composed of Irish other ranks and NCOs. They then became the 1st Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers in 1881 and served on the British establishment until 1922 when they were disbanded. This badge is a firegilt example, ie mercury gold amalgam fired in an oven on a gilding metal base. The two main lugs on the reverse are present, but the subsidiary wire attachments for the busby are missing (ie behind the flame). This is, in any case, a scarce badge to find, especially in such good condition where the gilding is concerned. |
