The Schutztruppe operated solely in Africa, protecting German colonies, which consisted of German South-West Africa, Cameroon, German East Africa. In 1919, along with all her other colonies, these were lost to the victorious allies at Versailles. These buttons were worn on each side of the tunic collars of white NCOs. These buttons were purchased with a pair of New Guinea police officer's epaulettes - I suspect a deserving sergeant was commissioned into this unit from the Kaiserliche Schutztruppe. I once had a sword which showed evidence of this practice via cancelled issue stamps, Togo police replacing earlier KS markings (see my site map for this). The standard tunic button had the Imperial German crown in white metal. Eight of these are by the same Berlin maker and one is made in two pieces with a sheet metal overlay on the body of the button. Their condition is excellent throughout, with very little wear. |
