These were worn by the irregular units raised by the German army as auxilliaries for service in WW2, on the Russian front, mainly from nationalist Baltic peoples and Ukrainians, to assist the SS and police in anti-partisan operations. For fear of Russian discovery after the war, little of this Schuma material survived. They are dark green cloth with a pale grey braid applied edge on a buckram base, stiffened with glue. The relevant shoulder strap was black wool with a white rayon marching swastika machine woven in the centre. The condition is excellent for the age, although it is clear that they have been well worn. Some 200 Schuma battalions were raised, indicating the extensive nature of partisan activity which faced the Germans. |
