Title Plug bayonet with scabbard
Nationality English
Period c 1685
Price £800.00
(This item is subject to special postage, click here for more information.)

This is a private purchase officer's weapon for use with a fusil, a lighter form of musket than that of the other ranks' issue weapon. This represents the first use of the bayonet in warfare.

The grip would appear to be fruitwood with brass mounts (the quillons being in the shape of the top half of a naked woman). The number '12' is inked onto the grip (possibly an armoury number). The blade (15.5" long) is a re-formed smallsword blade and has extensive brass inlay on the flat surface of the forte. The rare part, of course, is the scabbard. These do not normally survive from this era. It also has a small leather frog.

The condition throughout is excellent for the age. The blade has some grey age patina. The scabbard leather has some age wrinkles, but is otherwise in a good state.

Sword arrived today. Fabulous. This is an excellent example of a fighting sword of its period, and a real gem. The 1828 Pattern is such a gorgeous sword, and this is a fine example. Even my bride is impressed and she doesn’t really get swords.
